Hi Patricia,

Here is part of a recent letter I wrote to a family friend regarding my complete position on abortion:

I personally believe in the absolute sovereignty of the individual, especially with regards to their lives and person. So in that respect, I am "Pro-Abortion rights".

That however, is quite a bit different from being "Pro-Choice". Those who call themselves "Pro-Choice" are being intentionally misleading, as they aren't up front about exactly what they are choosing. Abortion is not birth control, and calling it something else is a dishonest attempt to mask the reality of what exactly what happens.

I think that the laws on abortion as they are written should stand. However, I also think that the laws we have are not being followed (in the case of late term abortions), and that the law should be enforced, as it was not written arbitrarily or lightly. I also believe that the casual attitude that many hold towards abortion increases the coarsening and hardening of the human spirit.

I also think that if we as a society are going to use public funds abortions, that needs to be balanced by an equal expenditure in contraception education/access, and also by an equal expenditure in facilitating and promotion of adoptions (all three should receive equal funding). I do not believe that this is the case currently, and would work to correct that.

Ultimately, I would want to achieve a drastic reduction in the number of abortions in New York State. When elected, I will use my position to talk about these subjects whenever the opportunity presents, and will vote on legislation that promotes this.

With respect to the Second Amendment, I believe it is only eclipsed in importance by the First Amendment. The framers of The Constitution did this for a very good reason.

I hope that answered your questions to your satisfaction!

Best regards,

Dave

I love the Guardian Angels and Curtis Sliwa as much as every other red-blooded New Yorker. :) They are a great example of what communities can do when they rely on each other, rather than government, to solve local problems.
